Starter Kit
Welcome to the Cal Poly SLO iOS App Challenge!
You are now confirmed as a participant. We will be revealing more details at the kick-off event, but this event challenges you to learn Objective-C if you don't already know it or to hone your skills if you've used it before.
Sign up as a developer
Please sign up as a developer at https://developer.apple.com. You can register for free to get basic access to the documentation. You only need to pay the $99 fee if you want to ultimately publish your app to the App Store. In the next few weeks, we'll send you an invite to join the Apple University Program so you can deploy your app to a real device for the competition.
Starting reading and watching videos now!
You want to hit the ground running with Objective-C on day one so we highly recommend reading up on the documentation before the kick-off event. A good starting point is the "Start Developing iOS Apps Today" document at https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#referencelibrary/GettingStarted/RoadMapiOS/chapters/Introduction.html. It provides a brief overview and links to modules with more in-depth information.
If you have some more time, there is also a great class at Stanford which you can take through iTunes U: https://itunes.apple.com/us/course/coding-together-developing/id593208016. This class covers iOS 6. For the most up-to-date frameworks, you can also check out the videos from our Worldwide Developers Conference at https://developer.apple.com/wwdc/videos/.
This past Spring, Apple hosted a similar event at RIT and two of the students there provided a crash course on using Xcode and Objective-C. Check these out as another way to get up to speed quickly!

Kick-Off Event
Make sure to put the weekend of October 18th through 20th on your calendar. Our kick-off event is on Friday night of that week. There, we will reveal a secret requirement of the app to prevent you from starting to work on it in advance. If you don't already have a team, you'll be able to find other people to join up with at the end. Attendance at the kick-off event is not required to participate, but it is highly recommended that at least one member of your team attend. Ideally everyone will want to go to the kick-off so you can learn the rules and the secret API.
We're excited to have you participating. If, for some reason, you are no longer able to participate, please cancel your registration to give other students an opportunity.
